About Medellin

Medellín (Population: 2,223,660, elevation: 1,495m/4,905ft) is a city in north-west of Colombia. Being the capital of the department/province of Antioquia, the town is the second most important in Colombia, with a denoted leadership in the areas of finance, banking, services, politics, art, culture, communications, fashion, and entertainment.

 

Due to its privileged location inside the Andes mountains, Medellín has rich flora and fauna and a warm climate, ranging between 18ºC and 28ºC all year round. 

Currency

The legal currency of Colombia is the Colombian Peso (COP). The main currencies exchange rate is approximately 3200 COP/USD and 3600 COP/EUR.

 

Shops and restaurants usually accept credit cards but take only Colombian pesos in cash. If you require to exchange money, the recommendation is going to banks or recognized exchange offices, easy to find in shopping centers. 

What to wear in Medellín?

For the climate of the city, it is recommended to wear fresh cotton clothes. In case you visit nearby municipalities, make sure to check the temperature at your destination, as the climate can have significant variations within a short distance.

If you are going to visit tourist sites, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended.

Transportation from the airport

The José María Córdova International Airport is located in the municipality of Rionegro, approximately 36 km from Medellín.

This service does not require a reservation. You can take it at the international exit and it will take you to the San Diego shopping center (located near the center of the city) for a cost of $16,000 COP.

 3.On site (regular) taxi

This service does not require a reservation. You can take it at the international exit and it will take you to your place of destination for a cost of $ 85,000 COP

Transportation within the city

  • Bus

It is the most popular means of transportation. All routes converge in the center of the city from the different sectors of origin. Also, they have arrival at the different Metro stations.

  • ​Taxi

Taxis are characterized by their yellow color, they have a charge table for points; This table is inside the vehicle in a part visible to the passenger.

 

Minimum rate:$ 5,500 COP

Hired:$ 25,200 COP per hour

  • ​Metro

Medellín has made considerable progress in terms of transportation with the entry into operation of the Metro, which has two lines: Line A in the north-south (crosses the entire city along the river) and line B in the east - West.
